The Key to the Competitive Edge?

Language!

Language and Productivity

Newcastle Language Systems specializes in improving employee productivity through communication. If you have a multinational staff, chances are that many of your non-native speakers of the corporate language are unable to clearly express their ideas. Moreover, the natural instinct we have to be embarrassed or even ashamed when we cannot make ourselves understood in a second language, especially one that we have studied for years, often prevents us from speaking up and expressing our thoughts and ideas. For companies, this results in loss of the brainpower and possibly the next great idea that will give your company the edge over your competition.

Cultural Barriers

However, language is not the only barrier faced by your non-native speaking staff. There's the cultural barrier, too. In US business culture, for example, it is often quite acceptable for employees to interrupt each other or even argue during meetings when expressing their views and ideas. Yet, even though tempers may flare during the meeting, it's back to business as usual after the meeting. No one is offended. No one is upset. Well, maybe they are for an hour or two, but by the end of the day, the conflict is usually forgotten and life goes on.

Depending on their native culture, however, your non-native speaking employees may not understand this. They believe it is incredibly impolite to speak when another is speaking, and so at meetings, they wait for a break in the conversation. And they wait...and they wait...and they wait... But that break never does come, and so they return to their desk with that great idea still in their head, perhaps thinking that they could take it to another company – one where people don't talk over each other.

Sociolinguistics and Mental Health

Of course, the above is just one example of how both language and cultural differences lead to both a communication breakdown and loss of business. Having worked with learners from many different cultural backgrounds, we here at Newcastle Language Systems are acutely aware of how these differences are affecting not only productivity, but the psychological health of your non-native staff. It's for this reason that we designed a survey that measures the Cross-Cultural Sociolinguistic Health of your company.

Consisting of approximately 70 questions, the survey focuses on how language and cultural differences affect employee attitudes toward the company and their personal growth. Measured on a 10 point Likert Scale, typical Disagree / Agree questions include:

  • I can completely trust any native English-speaking manager.

  • If I don't speak up at a meeting, it's often because native English speakers are dominating the discussion.

  • I feel that not speaking up at meetings is limiting my opportunities for career advancement.

  • I would like to increase my social interaction with non-native English-speaking colleagues whose native language is NOT my own.

  • I believe many of the native English-speaking managers and colleagues at my company socialize after work in places that focus on alcohol consumption (bars, pubs, night clubs, etc.)

By completing the survey, your non-native speaking employees can provide us with an anonymous picture of your Cross-Cultural Sociolinguistic Health. In this way, you can determine if it would be beneficial to your company to offer language courses.

This completely free survey is administered online, and we will even work with you to fine-tune the questions so that you receive a more accurate picture of your corporate Cross-Cultural Sociolinguistic Health. Contact us today to get your company on track to both a more efficient and cross-culturally inclusive future.
